JPG to Text
JPG — also written JPEG — is the default still-image format from most cameras, messaging apps, and email clients. Converting a JPG to text means running OCR on a lossy photo, not on a lossless screen capture. Compression throws away some high-frequency detail, which can blur punctuation, thin UI type, and the edges of small letters.
Screenshot2Text reads JPG and JPEG files in your browser. Drop the file, let Tesseract.js run locally, then copy the output. We do not upload the JPEG for OCR. PNG and WebP are also accepted on this same reader: if you still have a lossless screenshot, a PNG often preserves crisp UI fonts better than a re-saved JPEG. There is no separate PNG-to-text route yet; JPEG, PNG, and WebP all use the drop zone on this page or on the homepage.
File quality matters more than the extension. A highly compressed thumbnail emailed as a preview may skip commas or confuse I, l, and 1. Use the original camera roll file when you can, and rotate the image so lines of type are horizontal before you drop it. Very large JPEGs are processed on your device, so the first run may pause briefly while small recognition files are fetched (they stay cached after).
Typical JPG-to-text jobs include a camera photo of a printed letter, a JPEG export of a slide, or an image someone sent in chat. Clear printed type and high-contrast screenshots that happen to be saved as JPEG work best. Neon-on-neon signs and handwriting are weaker. Drop one JPEG or several.
